Did you ever just not want to train on a given day? No matter what you do to try to psyche yourself up you just could not get up the energy or the desire to workout that day. Well, here is a quick tip on how to get yourself out of those workout blues. Encourage a friend or friends to join you in your workouts. At Elite Basketball Training and Elite Sports Performance we often encourage the group training format. Training together with a friend or more than one friend will provide great benefits to your basketball skill development and/or sports performance workouts as the workouts will be competitive, challenging, and more fun.

Having a like minded individual to work out with will eliminate the days when you just do not feel like working out. Each of you can ensure that this never happens by motivating each other from the start. Once you are at the basketball court or weight room working out, having a training partner will completely change the dynamic of the workouts. They will be competitive and challenging as you and your partner push each other mentally and physically to make more jump shots, lift heavier weights, run the extra sprints. This will ultimately make you a much better basketball player and athlete. Beyond the obvious physical and mental benefits of training with a partner, the workouts will just simply be more FUN. Having one of your good friends around to train with will make the workouts less like work and more like another way to hang out. The workouts will be encouraging for all of you and bring you all closer together, knowing that you pushed each other to give your very best during each and every workout.

With this in mind, Elite Basketball Training and its sports performance training branch, Elite Sports Performance in accordance with the New Jersey Sports Academy will be hosting Bring-A-Friend week during the week of June 13-18. All participants in any of the Elite Basketball Training and/or Elite Sports Performance programs are encouraged to bring a friend to any of our workouts. The friend will be able to work out with the group for the hour for FREE and then can earn a discounted rate to any of our programs if they sign up that day. As a show of appreciation to our loyal customers who bring a friend to the workouts, they will also receive a discount to a future program if their friend signs up. There will be vendors and contests throughout the week including our athlete of the month sponsor, Muscle Maker Grill of Edison who will be there Thursday evening handing out free samples of their delicious and healthy food.

So how could you possibly say no to Bring-A-Friend week or training with a partner. I encourage you all to go out and invite a friend to work out with you and I guarantee it will help make your workouts competitive, challenging, and fun while making your game Elite.

See you on the court!

Elite Basketball Training is dedicated to your success as a basketball player and a coach. Normally this includes a multitude of information on basketball skill development and basketball specific strength, conditioning, speed and agility. However, today I am going to deviate from the norm and take a break from the basketball skills, drills, strength, speed, etc. Today, let us focus on getting motivated to be the best, and by the best, I mean no second places. Sometimes players and coaches are satisfied with second place. They make excuses like, “It wasn’t supposed to be our year.” Or, “That player is the best around, so we were supposed to lose.” These excuses show that players are satisfied with what they have achieved, that second place is no big deal to them. This drives me crazy!

The clip below is flat out awesome as it touches upon whether or not second place is no big deal.

Is second place a big deal for you? If not, keep sitting around watching clips on youtube. If it is, then use those clips to go out, and bust your tail in order to make sure that you do NOT end up in second place.

Do you have any clips or quotes that fire you up for a game? If so, share them with the Elite Basketball Training community in the comments section below. Thanks.

See you on the court!

Here are a few of the new Elite Basketbal Training videos that I have released on youtube. These videos include speed, agility, and strength training that can be used for basketball and many other sports. They were taken at one of the facilities that I work out of in New Jersey.

There is also a new testimonial below from one of my most recent trainees, Kevyn Douyon who is a starting guard at Bishop Ahr High School in Edison, New Jersey.

The Star Agility Drill: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_oQ35ySpLc

Sports Performance Training: http://www.youtube.com/user/elitebasketball?feature=mhum#p/a/u/1/16JPNwHbak0

Box Agility Drill: http://www.youtube.com/user/elitebasketball?feature=mhum#p/u/3/F18OSmX5eRg

Coach Stoner -

We would be remiss if we did not take the time to THANK YOU for the time you spent with Kevyn during the last few months during the Elite Basketball Bootcamp. During that time Kevyn has seen and felt tremendous results from your training sessions. If you recall at the start of these sessions we identified all of the areas of his training that would be targeted to specific aspects of “his game” on the court. Suffice it to say, the training has exceeded all of the objectives we identified at the start of the training. The results are evident in his play – he is quicker, more explosive, and stronger. The overall training has help him elevate his game and prepared him for the rigors of varsity high school basketball. In addition to the positive results you can see, the training has made him more confident both on and off the court. He did not miss a single session and enjoyed every minute of the training. He is definitely looking forward to starting the next session with you in the spring immediately after the end of the basketball session.

Thanks again and looking forward to working with you again very, very, soon!!!

Hope that you enjoyed the videos and let me know what you think in the comments section below.

As a long time basketball coach and trainer, I have always been an advocate of incorporating movements and skills of the game into the drills that are used for conditioning. The Four Line Sprint With Defensive Slide Drill is a perfect example of that. This drill combines, sprinting with another important game movement, defensive slides. In doing so, the drill becomes more specific while including elements of conditioning, speed, and agility.

Purpose of the Drill:

The purpose of this drill is to build up a player’s speed endurance using movements from the game of basketball.

Instructions:

The player should sprint to the foul line and perform three defensive slides steps back in one direction.

Then sprint to the half court line and perform three defensive slide drills back in the opposite direction.

Then sprint to the opposite foul line and perform three defensive slides back in the same direction as the first foul line.

Then sprint to the opposite baseline and perform three defensive slides back in the same direction used at half court.

Repeat for three to five rounds.

Points of Emphasis:

Staying low on your defensive slide.

Change directions from your sprint into your slide and back into your sprint quickly.

Stay low and balanced when changing directions and movements. This will allow for a more explosive transition out of each movement and into the next.

Motivation/Teaching Tips:

Time the drill.

Okay, I know that I promised those of you who are fans of Elite Basketball Training on facebook an article on the deadlift and why it is an important lift for basketball players, and I will definitely get that up as soon as possible. However, I would be remiss if I did not tell you guys one more time about how great this weekend’s Grand Athletic Expo at The Fields is going to be. Yours truly will be there on Sunday for the unveiling of my new Elite Sports Performance training facility as well as the new home base for The Highlight Reel’s recruiting services. I will have two groups working out at separate times so that everyone coming through can get a little taste of the type of workouts we will be conducting at the Elite Sports Performance Center. Not only that, all of the other great vendors that are located within The Fields will also be there. I’m talking about the Fred Hill Baseball Academy, Chix with Stix, a virtual golf club house and much, much more. For a video tour of The Fields check out my last post: My New Facility and for more detailed information, see the flyer below. Hope to see you all there!

Train hard, be efficient and I will see you at The Fields.

So if you do not know, I have been training people out of the back of my car for quite some time now. In order to do so, this requires me to lug around heavy sandbags, kettlebells, dumbells, cones, basketballs, the prowler, a blocking pad, plyo boxes, sleds…the list could go on for this entire post. Having all of this STUFF in my truck has essentially turned it into a lowrider, which is kind of cool since I was always a big fan of that song by War. If you don’t know which song I am talking about, check it out at Low Rider song. On top of all of this, I have been driving around on tires that were as bald as bowling balls. I am really not joking, bowling balls might have more grip. So yesterday I decided that it was time to get new ones and increase the safety of the vehicle that I drive on a daily basis. To do so, I had my wife drop me off at the park with all of my equipment and my almost two year old daughter and we trained outdoors. Just as an aside, my daughter being at one of my training sessions is a whole other story, but lets just say it was pretty funny when she got down and started doing pushups and planks with the guys.

Anyway the real point of this post is not to tell you about my lowrider Nissan Pathfinder and its once crappy tires, it is to tell you how you can get in a great workout with very little equipment. It is frustrating when players tell me that they cannot workout because they have no ride to the gym. That is an EXCUSE. You really do not need a gym to get a solid workout. For example yesterday, my guys did the following:

Sandbag Shouldering (similar to a deadlift) 3 x 6

Dumbell Jump Squats (Can be done with body weight) 3 x 6

Split Squats 3 x 6 with Pullups for max effort

Overhead medball throws 3 x 6 with max effort pushups

Prowler finisher

Two rounds of planks and side bridges each held for 30 seconds.

ALL AT THE PARK!

Now I know you are probably thinking, “Rich I don’t have all of that equipment.” This is fine, but much of what I wrote down can be done with bodyweight. Not to mention, a sandbag

costs about $20 to make, You can pick up dumbells on Craig’s List (btw who is Craig?) for next to nothing, and instead of a prowler, throw that sandbag in an old tire and push that around. All you need is a little imagination and some creativity and you could be getting killer workouts anywhere you want.

If you have any other rustic, old school training techniques please share them with the Elite Basketball Training community, we would love to hear from you all out there. In th mean time, train hard, be efficient, and I will see you on the court.

As Elite Basketball Training continues to grow we are including more opportunities for your son or daughter to improve their skills, strength, and speed on the basketball court. This fall’s programs from Elite Basketball training will include the usual Elite Basketball Skills and Drills Clinics. These clinics have run for the last five years and have helped many basketball players improve their basketball skills and take their game to the next level. For more information and a registration form click here ==> Elite Basketball Training Skills and Drills Clinics.

In addition to the Skills and Drills Clinics, Elite Basketball Training will be expanding on its successful Half Day Hoops Series from last fall. In its preliminary year, the Half Day Hoops Fest was run over the course of two days with great success as many parents liked the opportunity for their son or daughter to work on their basketball skills on their days off from school. This year, we are giving them even more opportunities to do so as the Half Day Hoops Series has been expanded from two sessions last fall to include five sessions this fall. Each session runs for three hours and if you sign up for all five sessions you can get in at the low cost of $150. That’s only $10 per hour! To register please click here ==> HALF DAY HOOPS SERIES.

Last but certainly not least, Elite Basketball Training is running its first ever fall session of the widely popular Elite Basketball Bootcamp. Basketball training is not always about skill development and the Elite Basketball Bootcamp is a great way to increase your strength, speed, agility, vertical jump, and conditioning on the basketball court. As parents and players have become more aware of this, this summer’s Elite Basketball Bootcamp saw its enrollment increase to four times the amount it was last year. These workouts are intense, use alternative training methods, and are geared toward basketball players that are serious about taking their game to a whole new level. Equally as exciting, this fall the Elite Basketball Bootcamp will run for an extra week and will be held indoors at The Sports Zone Fitness Center in Edison. For more information and a registration form click here ==> Elite Basketball Bootcamp.

As always, I keep the number of players attending my clinics low to ensure that those attending receive as much individualized attention as possible. So don’t miss the opportunity to work on your basketball skills, strength, and speed this fall. SIGN UP NOW so that you can become an ELITE BASKETBALL PLAYER.

NOT FROM THE RED BANK AREA???

NOT A PROBLEM…SPEND THE DAY AT SOME OF THESE GREAT PLACES.

On Tuesday the summer 2010 Elite Basketball Bootcamp kicked off with a bang. With the enrollment at FOUR TIMES what it was last summer, there was definitely a buzz of excitement in the air (or maybe that was the vuvuzelas that I was hearing all the way from The World Cup in South Africa). Seriously, these athletes were ready to go and were committed to spending the summer working out harder than ever before in order to get stronger, run faster, jump higher, and be more explosive.

In order to guage these categories, we started off on Tuesday with some simple baseline testing to determine where these athletes were at. I cannot stress enough how important testing is for anyone beginning a strength and conditioning program. It helps an athlete and a coach determine where they are, where they want to go, and how they are going to get there. On Tuesday we tested many facets that are important to the game of basketball including speed, agility without a change of movement, agility with a change of movement, strength, and vertical jump. All of the athletes’ times, repetitions, and heights were recorded so that they can be compared to when we test again at the end of the bootcamp.

Some of the scores for the tests were really good and I cannot wait to see how far they can go by pushing there bodies to the limits this summer. Today is our first true workout and it is going to be a tough one, but with the positive energy that was displayed on Tuesday and the willingness to work hard, there is no doubt they will get through it.

If you are interested in signing up for The Elite Basketball Bootcamp, there is still time. Simply go to Elite Basketball Bootcamp and return the printable brochure to me.
